Wealth Coach, BetterWealth
Justin Gartman
Justin Gartman is a wealth coach at BetterWealth. On the AND Asset channel he is usually the one taking a piece of policy mechanics that sounds like jargon, putting the illustration on screen, and showing what it does to the numbers.
The overfunding explainer is the clearest example of how he works. He runs the same 100,000 dollar premium through a traditional design and an overfunded one, then spends as much time on what the second one costs you in death benefit as on what it gains you in cash value.
Known for
Policy design explainers. What overfunding means, what paid-up additions do, and where the break-even point moves when the design changes.
Show the illustration, then show the same premium built the other way, so the trade is visible rather than described.
Wealth coach. He works directly with clients on whether a design fits what they are trying to do.
What he actually argued
- A traditional whole life policy is not a bad product.
- It is a policy built for a different job. Designed for the largest death benefit per dollar, it will show zero cash value for two years, and that is the design working as intended rather than failing.
- The flexibility matters more than the growth.
- In an overfunded design only the base premium and term rider are required, often around a fifth of the ceiling. The paid-up additions on top are optional, so a tight year means paying the minimum instead of losing the policy.
- The ratio is the whole design.
- A traditional policy is close to 100 percent base premium. An overfunded one runs 10 to 20 percent base, a small term rider, and everything else into paid-up additions.
In his own words
“It's designed to give you the most insurance, not the most efficient cash value.”
“The paid up additions are actually optional. You don't have to pay all of them. You don't have to pay any of them.”
